Ship Operations, Crewing and Management
Ship operations portal: ISM in practice, cargo operations and stowage, bunkering, tank cleaning, dry-docking, manning, STCW certification and MLC welfare.
This portal covers running a ship day to day: ISM safety management in practice, cargo operations and stowage, solid bulk cargoes under the IMSBC Code, dangerous goods, bunkering, tank cleaning, dry-docking and planned maintenance, manning, STCW certification, seafarer welfare under the MLC, and vetting.
The governing instruments are the ISM Code, the IMSBC Code for solid bulk cargoes, the IMDG Code for packaged dangerous goods, the IBC and IGC Codes for liquid and gas cargoes in bulk, STCW 1978 as amended and the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, with industry guidance from OCIMF and the ICS.
The text of the conventions belongs to Regulation, Conventions and Class; the conduct of the ship at sea belongs to Nautical Science and Navigation.

- IMSBC Code: solid bulk cargo classification and carriage
The IMSBC Code is the SOLAS VI/1-2 mandatory framework for solid bulk cargoes: the Group A, B and C system, the shipper declaration, testing and the schedules.
- IMSBC Group A cargoes: cargoes that may liquefy
IMSBC Group A covers solid bulk cargoes that may liquefy or dynamically separate above their transportable moisture limit: the definition, tests, documents and schedules.
- IMSBC Group B: solid bulk cargoes with chemical hazards
IMSBC Group B covers solid bulk cargoes possessing a chemical hazard: the seven MHB codes, the two segregation matrices, and the schedules for coal and DRI.
- IMSBC Group C: the residual solid bulk cargo group
IMSBC Group C is the residual class of solid bulk cargo: no liquefaction, no chemical hazard, but a declaration, a trimming duty and a tank top load limit.
- Crude Oil Washing and Tank Cleaning on Oil Tankers
Crude oil washing, water washing and gas-freeing of oil tanker cargo tanks: COW programs, inert gas, slop tanks, load-on-top, ODME limits and ORB entries.
- Enclosed Space Entry on Ships: Testing, Permit, Rescue
Enclosed space entry on ships: which spaces count, the MSC.581(110) atmosphere criteria, testing order, the permit to work, attendant duties and rescue.
- Marine maintenance management: ISM, CMS, PMS and CBM
How shipboard maintenance is governed: ISM Code section 10, the IACS survey schemes Z18, Z20 and Z27, condition monitoring standards, and the spare parts question.
- IMDG Class 2: Gases, Divisions 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3
IMDG Class 2 gases under Amendment 42-24: Divisions 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3, cylinders, portable tanks, aerosols, stowage, segregation, EmS and the IGC boundary.
