Baltic Handysize Index
The BHSI and its seven-route HS7TC basket, the BHSI38 benchmark vessel, the HSATC and HSPTC regional averages, and why Handysize left the BDI in 2018.
The Baltic Handysize Index covers seven routes on the BHSI38 benchmark vessel, a 38,200 tonne deadweight self-trimming geared bulk carrier with four 30 tonne cranes, weighted 0.125 on HS1 to HS4 and 0.20, 0.20 and 0.10 on HS5, HS6 and HS7, with a multiplier of 0.055556. It is published standalone: Handysize was removed from the Baltic Dry Index effective 1 March 2018.
The full article will carry each route definition, the BHSI38 vessel description, the regional HSATC Atlantic and HSPTC Pacific averages introduced in April 2026 and re-weighted in June 2026, the derived Handysize 28 series, and the reasoning behind the 2018 removal from the composite.
