Baryte, Flotation Chemical Grade: IMSBC Schedule

The Group A baryte cargo introduced by IMSBC amendment 07-23: a 75 micrometre flotation powder liable to liquefy above its transportable moisture limit.

BARYTE, FLOTATION CHEMICAL GRADE is a Bulk Cargo Shipping Name introduced into the IMSBC Code by amendment 07-23, resolution MSC.539(107), and it is a Group A cargo liable to liquefy above its transportable moisture limit. The Code describes it as a product made from naturally occurring low-grade baryte ore by flotation, with barium sulphate at 97 per cent and trace silicon dioxide, iron oxide, aluminium oxide, strontium sulphate and calcium carbonate, presenting as an odourless white or off-white powder ground to 75 micrometres.

It is not the same cargo as barytes , the coarse Group C ore, and the distinction is the most consequential one in the barium family: the flotation grade carries transportable moisture limit certification, the section 7.3.2 weather regime, a prohibition on ventilating the cargo spaces during the voyage, a duty to check the cargo surface regularly, and a place of refuge clause where free water or a fluid state is observed. Its schedule gives a bulk density of 2,637 kg/m3, a stowage factor of 0.38 m3/t and an angle of repose of 46.3 degrees, and it appears on the Appendix 3 list of cargoes non-cohesive when dry, which routes its trimming to section 5.4.5.

The full article will cover the schedule field by field, the TML and moisture certification chain, the loading and monitoring regime, and the declaration tests that separate it from the Group C ore at the hatch.
