BIMCO 2020 Fuel Transition Clause
The BIMCO 2020 Fuel Transition Clause for time charters: discharge of fuel above 0.50% before the 1 March 2020 carriage ban and tank preparation.
The BIMCO 2020 Fuel Transition Clause for Time Charter Parties, published 10 December 2018, dealt with the move from high-sulphur fuel to 0.50% fuel on time charters spanning 1 January 2020. It defines non-compliant fuel as fuel with a sulphur content above 0.50% and sets the carriage ban date at 1 March 2020.
Charterers discharge and dispose of remaining non-compliant fuel at their risk, time and cost by the carriage ban date or redelivery, and owners make the tanks fit for compliant fuel. The full article will cover the clause’s scope, why it was not intended for scrubber-fitted ships, and why it does not by its terms govern a later de-bunkering.
