Canada Cruise Ship Grey Water Interim Order

Transport Canada's 2023 interim order bars cruise ship grey water and treated sewage discharge within 3 nm where possible and requires treatment to 12 nm.

On 23 June 2023, Transport Canada announced mandatory environmental measures for cruise ships, implemented by an Interim Order under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 with immediate effect. The order prohibits the discharge of grey water and treated sewage within 3 nautical miles of shore where geographically possible, and requires grey water to be treated with sewage, using an approved device, before discharge between 3 and 12 nautical miles south of latitude 60° N. Penalties reach CAD 250,000.
