Cargo Hold Gas Sampling Points and Arrangements

Sealed sampling points, remote sampling lines and the arrangements that allow a hold atmosphere to be tested without anyone entering the space.

A cargo hold sampling arrangement lets the atmosphere in a sealed hold be measured from the deck, without opening the hatch and without anyone entering. It is the physical precondition for every monitoring regime on a gas-producing bulk cargo, and its absence is why some older ships cannot monitor without breaking the seal they are trying to maintain.

The full article will cover the arrangements in use, including sealed sampling points on the hatch cover, permanent sampling lines led to a manifold, and portable sampling tubes lowered through an access, together with the pump and tubing lengths each requires and the purge time before a reading is valid.

It will also cover the IMSBC requirements that assume such an arrangement exists, notably the COAL schedule appendix requirement for instruments capable of measuring methane, oxygen, carbon monoxide and bilge pH without requiring entry into the cargo space, and the sampling-point discipline that makes a trend log meaningful.
