Coke: IMSBC Schedule and Carriage
The COKE schedule under the IMSBC Code: Group C, 341 to 800 kg/m3, the widest stowage factor band in the Code at 1.25 to 2.93 m3/t.
COKE is a Group C schedule in appendix 1 of the IMSBC Code , covering the porous carbon residue left after coal is heated in the absence of air. It is the lightest of the common Group C cargoes and it carries the widest stowage factor band in the Code, 1.25 to 2.93 m3/t against a bulk density of 341 to 800 kg/m3, so a coke cargo cubes out on volume long before the ship approaches its deadweight.
The full article will cover the schedule cell by cell, the distinction between metallurgical coke, foundry coke and petroleum coke, and the dust and breakage problems that dominate coke handling. Coke is friable, so the fines generated between the coke oven and the discharge grab are a commercial loss as well as a housekeeping problem.
It will also set the schedule against its neighbours, since coke sits close to several cargoes that are not Group C. Petroleum coke has its own schedules and its own hazard profile, and coal itself is classified group A and B, never Group C.
