Dangerous Goods Transport Document (DGD) under the IMDG Code

The IMDG dangerous goods transport document is the shipper's legal cargo description: UN number, shipping name, class, subsidiary hazard and packing group.

The dangerous goods transport document, often called the dangerous goods declaration (DGD), is the shipper’s description of dangerous goods offered for sea transport under chapter 5.4 of the IMDG Code . IMDG 5.4.1.4.1 requires, in sequence, the UN number, the proper shipping name with the technical name where required, the class, any subsidiary hazard in parentheses, and the packing group.

Entry-specific statements are added under 5.4.1.5, for example the control and emergency temperatures for temperature-controlled substances (5.4.1.5.5) and, under Amendment 42-24, the production date, packing date and packing temperature for charcoal UN 1361 (5.4.1.5.18). Marine pollutants carry the words MARINE POLLUTANT (5.4.1.4.3.6). Worked examples for Class 4 are in that article.

The full article will cover the mandatory sequence, the shipper’s signed declaration, electronic transmission, and the master’s acceptance checks.
