Direct Reduced Iron (D): IMSBC Code Schedule and Carriage

The DIRECT REDUCED IRON (D) schedule new in IMSBC amendment 07-23: Group A and B fines at 2 percent minimum moisture, 30 day ageing, and 1.2 cubic metres per hour per tonne of ventilation.

DIRECT REDUCED IRON (D), by-product fines with a moisture content of at least 2 percent, was introduced into the IMSBC Code by resolution MSC.539(107), amendment 07-23. It is the only one of the four DRI schedules classified Group A and B, and the only one carried under mechanical ventilation rather than under an inert atmosphere.

The carriage strategy is the inverse of DRI (B) and DRI (C). Rather than holding the fines bone dry and sealing the hold under nitrogen below 5 percent oxygen, the schedule requires the cargo to carry at least 2 percent moisture, below its transportable moisture limit, and ventilates the hydrogen away. The full article will cover the 30 day natural ageing requirement, the three-consecutive-day stockpile temperature log measured 20 to 30 cm below the surface at 3 metre intervals, the 65 degrees C loading ceiling, the 24 hour pre-sailing wait with its 12 consecutive hour stability conditions, the airflow requirement of at least 1.2 cubic metres per hour per tonne, the 0.2 percent hydrogen ventilation capacity, the two spare sets of certified ventilation equipment, and the time-based gas prediction curve.

It will also cover the dual-group consequence, which is that a DRI (D) parcel needs both the Group A moisture certificate under section 4.3.2 and the Group B chemical characteristics statement under section 4.3.6.
