GFI Calculation Guidelines Under the IMO Net-Zero Framework

The pending IMO guidelines for calculating a ship's attained annual GFI under draft MARPOL Annex VI regulation 33, including wind, solar and shore power energy.

The GFI calculation guidelines are the IMO guidelines that draft regulation 33 of the IMO Net-Zero Framework refers to for calculating a ship’s attained annual GHG fuel intensity. Footnotes 78 and 79 of the approved text describe them as guidelines “to be developed”. Regulation 33.2 already names shore power, wind propulsion and solar power in the total energy used on board, but leaves the method for measuring and entering non-fuel energy to these guidelines.

The full article will cover the guidelines once a draft is published: the treatment of wind and solar energy, onboard power supply intensities, battery and fuel cell energy, and the relation to the emission factors of MEPC.391(81). The formula the guidelines would implement is set out in the Marine Global Fuel Standard methodology .
