Green Award certification
Green Award is a voluntary certification for ships and companies exceeding statutory safety and environmental standards, rewarded by port dues discounts.
Green Award is a voluntary certification scheme run by the Green Award Foundation for ships and shipping companies that exceed statutory safety and environmental requirements. Certification is audited rather than self-declared, and its commercial value comes from the incentive providers that attach discounts to it.
The Port of Rotterdam applies a 70 percent discount on the sustainability component of seaport dues for qualifying LNG, chemical, gas and oil or product tankers holding a certificate. For inland shipping from 1 January 2025 the discount is tiered by certification level, from 15 percent at Bronze and Silver through 30 percent at Gold to 100 percent at Platinum, with a further discount for sharing emissions data.
The full article will cover the certification tiers and their audit requirements, the seagoing and inland schemes, the incentive providers by port, and the scheme’s relationship to the Environmental Ship Index , which the same foundation administers.
