International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate (IAPP)

The IAPP Certificate and its Supplement record a ship's MARPOL Annex VI compliance, including any equivalent arrangement accepted under Regulation 4 in section 2.6.

The International Air Pollution Prevention Certificate is the MARPOL Annex VI certificate issued to a ship of 400 gross tonnage and above after an initial survey, valid for a period the Administration sets at not more than five years. Its Supplement, the Record of Construction and Equipment, is where the technical detail lives, and it is the part a port State control officer reads.

Section 2.3 of the Supplement records how the ship meets the Regulation 14 sulphur limits , with separate entries for operation inside and outside an emission control area and a checkbox for an equivalent arrangement approved under Regulation 4 . Section 2.6, headed Equivalents, is a three-column table of system or equipment, equivalent used, and approval reference, and it is where an exhaust gas cleaning system is actually entered.

The full article will cover the certificate’s form and validity, the survey regime in Regulations 5 and 6, the endorsement of annual and intermediate surveys, the effect of a change of flag, and the interaction with the International Oil Pollution Prevention Certificate and the wider certificate set a port State control officer works through.
