IMO Code on Alerts and Indicators, 2009

The Code on Alerts and Indicators, resolution A.1021(26) of 2 December 2009, sets the priority, location and presentation of alarms and indicators on ships.

The Code on Alerts and Indicators, 2009, adopted by the IMO Assembly as resolution A.1021(26) on 2 December 2009, sets how alarms, warnings, cautions and indicators required by IMO instruments are prioritized, where they appear, and how they are presented on the bridge, in the machinery spaces and elsewhere on board.

It classifies alerts by priority: emergency alarms, alarms, warnings and cautions. The second and third stage remote alarms of the bridge navigational watch alarm system are listed as emergency alarms in paragraph 3.2.8, and table 10.1.1 sets the navigation-bridge alerts. The full article will cover the priority definitions, the location tables, the colours and sounds, and the code’s relationship to Bridge Alert Management under MSC.302(87).
