The IMO Sub-Committee on Navigation, Communications and Search and Rescue (NCSR) prepares the technical work on navigation, radiocommunications and search and rescue for the Maritime Safety Committee. It took over the work of the former NAV and COMSAR sub-committees in the 2013 reorganization of IMO sub-committees.
Performance standards for bridge and radio equipment usually start there. The 2021 amendments to the voyage data recorder standards, MSC.494(104) and MSC.493(104), were adopted on the recommendation of its eighth session.
