Integrated Navigation System (INS)
The IMO integrated navigation system performance standard MSC.252(83): task stations, integrity monitoring and the equipment it applies to.
An integrated navigation system (INS) combines navigation sensors and functions such as route monitoring, collision avoidance and navigation control data into one system with defined task stations. The IMO standard is resolution MSC.252(83), Revised performance standards for integrated navigation systems, adopted 8 October 2007 and applicable to systems installed on or after 1 January 2011.
SOLAS regulation V/15 sets the design principles for the bridge but does not incorporate MSC.252(83); the standard applies through type approval under regulation V/18. The full article will cover INS task structure, consistent common reference, integrity monitoring and alert handling. See SOLAS Chapter V .
