INTERCARGO Bulk Carrier Casualty Report

The annual industry casualty record for bulk carriers over 10,000 dwt: its method, its rolling ten-year window, and its combined liquefaction category.

INTERCARGO has published an annual Bulk Carrier Casualty Report since the 1990s, covering total losses of bulk carriers over 10,000 deadweight tonnes on a rolling ten-year window, with lives lost, causes attributed and the availability of flag State investigation reports. It is the industry’s principal quantitative record of the sector’s safety performance.

Two features determine how it should be cited. Its liquefaction category expressly covers liquefaction and dynamic separation together, so the figure is a combined moisture-hazard total. And it reports on the availability of investigation reports, which is itself a finding: a substantial share of losses have no published report years afterwards. The full article will cover the method, the series and the reporting-delay finding.
