Joint War Committee listed areas

The Lloyd's Market Association and IUA listing of hull war, piracy and terrorism areas, and what a listing does to a ship's cover.

The Joint War Committee is a joint body of the Lloyd’s Market Association and the International Underwriting Association of London that publishes the Hull War, Piracy, Terrorism and Related Perils Listed Areas. Ships sailing into a listed area may require additional war risk cover, and a listing is the insurance market’s formal marker that a passage has become hazardous.

The current circular is JWLA-034, reviewed in July 2026. Rating is negotiated between underwriters and brokers and the Committee plays no part in it, and every circular states that application to individual contracts is a matter for specific negotiation. The southern Red Sea listing was extended southward in December 2023 and again in 2026 as the Red Sea crisis developed.

The full article will cover the Committee’s composition and process, how a listing feeds an additional premium quote, the notification and breach mechanics under a hull war policy, and the listing history of the main chokepoints.
