Lime (Unslaked): IMSBC Code Schedule and Carriage

The LIME (UNSLAKED) schedule under the IMSBC Code: Group B with MHB codes SH and CR, the water reaction that ignites nearby materials, and the segregation from all Group B cargoes.

LIME (UNSLAKED) is the IMSBC Bulk Cargo Shipping Name for quicklime, and the Appendix 4 index routes both Calcium oxide and Quicklime to it, so those are synonyms rather than shipping names in their own right. The cargo is Group B carrying the MHB notation SH and/or CR.

The hazard is heat, not toxic gas, which is why the schedule carries SH and CR rather than WT. The Hazard cell states that unslaked lime combines with water to form calcium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide, that the reaction develops a great deal of heat which may be sufficient to cause ignition of nearby combustible materials, and that the cargo is corrosive to eyes and mucous membranes. The full article will cover the whole schedule, including the unusually broad segregation requirement of separated from all packaged dangerous goods and solid bulk cargoes in group B, the dry-handling regime, the dust protection provisions, the prohibition on discharging during precipitation, and the fire response of nil, non-combustible, do not use water.

It will also address what the schedule does not require, since commercial guidance often adds items to it: there is no hatch cover test requirement and no cargo securing provision in the schedule text.
