Livestock carrier
A livestock carrier is a ship built to carry live animals as cargo; carcass disposal at sea falls under MARPOL Annex V Regulation 4.1.4 and the 2017 Guidelines.
A livestock carrier is a ship built or converted to carry live animals, typically cattle and sheep, as cargo. Animals that die or are euthanized during the voyage are animal carcasses under MARPOL Annex V Regulation 1.1, and their discharge is governed by Regulation 4.1.4 : as far from the nearest land as possible, with the 2017 Guidelines in MEPC.295(71) recommending more than 100 nautical miles and the maximum water depth possible.
