A low sulphur surcharge (LSS) is a liner surcharge recovering the extra cost of low sulphur fuel, most recently the 0.10% sulphur fuel required in emission control areas under MARPOL Annex VI regulation 14.4. At Maersk the BAF recovered 0.5% sulphur fuel and the LSS the 0.1% fuel, until its Fossil Fuel Fee began replacing both in 2024.
