Lysblink Seaways 2015: Kilchoan Grounding
Lysblink Seaways ran aground at full speed near Kilchoan on 18 February 2015 with a sole OOW affected by alcohol and the BNWAS switched off (MAIB 25/2015).
The Lysblink Seaways grounding is the subject of MAIB Accident Investigation Report 25/2015, published on 19 November 2015. On 18 February 2015, on passage from Belfast to Skogn in Norway, the general cargo vessel ran aground at full speed near Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula, west Scotland. She stayed on the rocky foreshore for almost two days, about 25 tonnes of marine gas oil entered the water from breached tanks, and she was declared a constructive total loss.
The MAIB found the officer of the watch, the sole watchkeeper, had become inattentive through alcohol; the bridge navigational watch alarm system had not been switched on, the electronic chart system off-track alarm had been silenced, and a radar watch alarm sounding every 6 minutes could be reset without leaving the chair. The full article will cover the voyage, the bridge equipment configuration, the salvage and the MAIB’s safety lessons.
