MARIN
The Maritime Research Institute Netherlands: model basins, joint industry projects, and its authorship of the 2019 bollard pull trial standard.
MARIN, the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands, is a hydrodynamic research institute at Wageningen whose model basins, computational work and joint industry projects underpin a large part of published ship hydrodynamics. Its duct series, including the accelerating 19A profile used on most tug propellers, carries its name rather than a standards body designation.
MARIN ran the Bollard Pull Joint Industry Project from November 2015 over three years with 31 industry participants, investigating 16 factors affecting bollard pull through model tests, computational fluid dynamics and full scale validation on nine tugs and five types of load cell. The output was a 31 page document titled International Standard For Bollard Pull Trials, dated July 2019 and released free to the public. It carries no ISO, IEC or ASTM designation, and Bureau Veritas reproduced it in NR467 Part E, Chapter 1, Appendix 1.
The full article will cover the institute’s facilities and history, the joint industry project model and how its deliverables reach class rules, and the duct and propeller series that bear its name.
