Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB)

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch investigates accidents to UK ships worldwide and to ships in UK waters, publishing numbered reports and flyers.

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) is the United Kingdom’s marine accident investigation body. It investigates accidents to UK ships worldwide and to other ships in UK territorial waters, to determine causes and make safety recommendations rather than to apportion blame.

Its numbered reports are a primary source for bridge watchkeeping casualties, including the Danio (8/2014), Lysblink Seaways (25/2015) and BBC Marmara (8/2023) groundings, and its safety flyer of 30 November 2023 on the circumvention of lookouts and the BNWAS . The full article will cover the MAIB’s statutory basis, its report series and safety studies, and how its recommendations reach the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the IMO.
