MARPOL Annex VI Appendix VI verification procedure

The MARPOL Annex VI Appendix VI sulphur verification procedure: Part 1 and Part 2, the 0.59R margin, 0.53% and 0.11%, ISO 8754 and lab accreditation.

Appendix VI of MARPOL Annex VI is the procedure a laboratory and a competent authority use to decide whether a fuel oil sample has met the sulphur limit of Regulation 14. MEPC.324(75), adopted 20 November 2020 and in force 1 April 2022, replaced it in full, and the text is carried in the 2021 revised Annex VI.

The full article will set out Part 1 for the MARPOL delivered sample, where a result above the limit has not met the requirement and there is no margin, and Part 2 for in-use and onboard samples, where a result up to the limit plus 0.59R is deemed to have met it. Table 2 gives the test margin values of 0.11% m/m for the 0.10% limit and 0.53% m/m for the 0.50% limit. It will cover the ISO 8754:2003 method named in the procedure, its replacement by ISO 8754:2025, and ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation.
