MARPOL delivered sample
The MARPOL delivered sample under Annex VI Regulation 18.8.1: where it is drawn, its 600 ml volume, sealing, 12-month retention and verification.
The MARPOL delivered sample is the representative sample of fuel oil that must accompany every bunker delivery note under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 18.8.1, defined at Regulation 2.1.22. It is sealed and signed by the supplier’s representative and the master or officer in charge on completion of bunkering, and retained under the ship’s control until the fuel is substantially consumed, and in any case for not less than 12 months.
The full article will cover the sampling guidelines in MSC-MEPC.2/Circ.18 of 11 July 2024, which revoked MEPC.182(59): a continuous drip sample at the receiving ship’s inlet bunker manifold, a container of not less than 600 ml filled to 90% plus or minus 5%, and sealing. It will explain how Part 1 of Appendix VI verifies the sample with no test margin, why a broken seal makes the sample unusable, and how the sample differs from commercial samples under the supply contract.
