Mediterranean NOx Emission Control Area: Study Status
The possible designation of the Mediterranean as a NOx emission control area: the REMPEC feasibility study, the November 2025 Malta meeting and the 2032 horizon.
A Mediterranean NOx emission control area would apply the MARPOL Annex VI regulation 13 Tier III NOx limits in the Mediterranean, which is today a sulphur and particulate matter ECA only. A regional expert meeting in Malta on 18 and 19 November 2025 reviewed a feasibility study prepared through REMPEC and recommended that entry into force should not be earlier than 2032; its conclusions go to the REMPEC Focal Points meeting planned for 2027. No proposal has been submitted to IMO.
