NOx Technical Code 2008
The NOx Technical Code 2008 is the mandatory code governing the survey, certification and emission testing of marine diesel engines under MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 13.
The NOx Technical Code 2008, adopted as resolution MEPC.177(58), is the mandatory code that makes Regulation 13 operable. It sets the procedures for pre-certification, initial certification and in-service survey of a marine diesel engine, the test cycles and weighting factors, the Engine International Air Pollution Prevention certification chain, and the onboard verification methods.
Its reach extends past NOx. The 2021 Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems require emission testing to follow the Code except where they provide otherwise, and they take their analyser calibration requirements and span gas provisions from its appendices, so a scrubber emission test is run under a NOx instrument.
The full article will cover the Code’s structure, the Engine Family and Engine Group concepts, the Technical File and the onboard NOx verification procedures, the direct measurement and monitoring method, the parameter check method, and the amendments made by resolutions MEPC.397(83) and MEPC.398(83).
