Maritime Code of the People's Republic of China
China's maritime statute, revised 28 October 2025 and in force 1 May 2026, including its marine insurance chapter.
The Maritime Code of the People’s Republic of China was adopted on 7 November 1992 and came into force on 1 July 1993. A revision adopted by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress on 28 October 2025, promulgated by Presidential Order No. 58, came into force on 1 May 2026 and renumbered the marine insurance chapter as Articles 240 to 282.
The full article will cover the code’s carriage, charter party, collision, salvage, general average, limitation and insurance chapters, what the 2025 revision changed, including the written agreed value rule and the partial-loss underinsurance rule, and how it differs from English law. The cargo insured value article covers how this topic affects the sum insured on a cargo policy.
