RightShip Safety Score

The RightShip Safety Score is a score out of five grading a vessel's safety record from its incident, deficiency, port state control, class and flag history.

The RightShip Safety Score grades a vessel’s safety record out of five, with five the highest, benchmarked against the historical operational performance of the world fleet. RightShip launched it in 2021 alongside its current Platform, replacing the earlier star rating and the Qi risk rating. It is the safety half of a vetting decision and is calculated separately from the RightShip GHG Rating , which grades design carbon intensity.

The score combines rule-based tests with statistical modelling. A vessel is first tested against a set of safety-performance rules, and a triggered rule assigns a low or unavailable score with a defined route to resolution. Sub-scores cover the incident record, deficiency and port state control outcomes, class performance and flag performance, and RightShip names the document of compliance holder, the accident history and the PSC inspection history as major determining factors.

On 20 August 2025 RightShip changed the method so that PSC deficiencies are weighted by severity rather than counted against a regional average. The full article will cover the scope, the rule set, the sub-score construction, the severity weighting change and how the score interacts with the vetting recommendation.
