Seed Cake: IMSBC Code Schedule and Carriage
The seed cake family in the IMSBC Code: the UN-numbered and MHB limbs, oil content and moisture triggers, and the self-heating hazard they share.
Seed cake is the residue left after oil is extracted from oilseeds, and the IMSBC Code splits it across several Bulk Cargo Shipping Names according to the extraction method, the residual oil content and the moisture content. Some limbs carry a UN number and an IMDG class; others are materials hazardous only in bulk.
The full article will set out which entry applies to which product, the oil and moisture thresholds that route a consignment between them, and why solvent-extracted meal and mechanically expelled cake behave differently in a stow.
It will also cover the self-heating and oxygen depletion hazards the family shares with fishmeal and copra, the ventilation and temperature monitoring the schedules require, and the enclosed-space entry consequences of carrying a cargo that consumes oxygen throughout the voyage.
