Territorial sea and innocent passage

The territorial sea under UNCLOS Part II extends up to 12 nautical miles from the baselines; the coastal State has sovereignty, subject to innocent passage.

The territorial sea is the belt of sea up to 12 nautical miles from the baselines over which a coastal State has sovereignty, subject to the right of innocent passage of foreign ships under Part II of UNCLOS .

Many IMO liability conventions treat it differently from the exclusive economic zone . The Nairobi Wreck Removal Convention 2007 excludes it by default and lets each State bring it in by an Article 3(2) notification. The full article will cover baselines, innocent passage, coastal State jurisdiction over foreign ships, and the contiguous zone.
