World Container Index (WCI)
Drewry's weekly container benchmark: eight routes plus a composite, the dollar per FEU basis, the 30 percent median outlier rule and the carrier-average build.
The World Container Index is published weekly by Drewry Shipping Consultants across eight named routes plus a composite, quoted in US dollars per forty foot container rather than in index points. It is a freight-all-kinds, container yard to container yard assessment for standard dry boxes, including bunker and currency adjustment, peak season and canal surcharges and, since 2024, the EU Emissions Trading System cost, with terminal handling included or excluded by route.
The construction is distinctive: Drewry publishes the median of submitted rates, discards any rate more than 30 percent above or below it, a threshold revised from 20 percent in week 20 of 2021, then averages within each monitored carrier before averaging the carriers. The full article will cover each route, the surcharge treatment and the comparison against FBX and SCFI.
