ZNZ Rewards Under the IMO Net-Zero Framework

Zero or near-zero GHG fuels and rewards under draft MARPOL Annex VI regulation 39: the 19.0 and 14.0 gCO2eq/MJ thresholds and the reward still to be defined.

ZNZ rewards are the payments the draft IMO Net-Zero Framework would make from the IMO Net-Zero Fund to ships using zero or near-zero GHG emission technologies, fuels and energy sources. Draft regulation 39.1 sets the ZNZ threshold at a GFI not greater than 19.0 gCO2eq/MJ until 31 December 2034 and not greater than 14.0 gCO2eq/MJ from 1 January 2035. Regulation 39.3 requires the Committee to define the reward and its methodology by 1 March 2027 and to review it every five years; the approved text contains no reward amount.

The full article will cover the threshold against the MEPC.391(81) default intensities, the certification route for a fuel to qualify, the Registry records of ZNZ energy and avoided emissions under regulation 38.6, and the Fund’s disbursement rules. The attained GFI calculation that ZNZ fuels feed into is in the Marine Global Fuel Standard methodology .
